Star Wars: TIE Fighter Collector's Series

Star Wars: TIE Fighter Collector's Series Review

TIE Fighter, by Lucas Arts, remains an impressive game many years after its initial release. Allowing you to pilot a variety of craft while serving the Empire, TIE Fighter lets you delve into the Star Wars universe from a perspective difficult to acquire from other games.

Being an older game, TIE Fighter lacks the stunning graphics of modern flight simulators. It uses no 3D acceleration card, but the software rendering is very fast on any modern machine, and you should have no trouble with playability. The combat sequences still look good, as do the animation scenes. The animations were impressive when the game was made, and still hold as much wonder as 2-dimensional animated figures and ships can muster.

In this game, you fly various spacecraft for the evil Galactic Empire, engaging in a variety of missions and campaigns in various sectors of the galaxy. The plot is especially strong for a space combat game; the campaigns all link together into a coherent story and plot developments in one campaign will affect your experience in later missions. Additionally, the view of the inner workings of the Empire's space forces that this game provides is fascinating and different: inner strife, wavering alliances, and the tensions hidden throughout the Imperial Navy's strict military structure all are slowly revealed through the course of the campaigns. If you ever wondered how flying for the Empire would differ from flying for the Alliance, behind the scenes, this game can provide you with an engrossing and unique view.

Learning to control your craft is not a difficult task. The game includes tutorial-type missions in a "flight simulator" that guide you through the basics of movement and ship control. Your ship has enough functions and controls to make the experience realistic, but not so many that you feel that you are always fiddling with the flight controls instead of flying your ship. You learn the basics of ship movement, propulsion, weapons systems, and how to operate the targeting computer quickly, but there are plenty of unnecessary advanced features for the player that prefers complexity and strategy. Before long, you will delight in using your targeting computer to locate individual laser turrets on a large ship and destroy them with concussion missiles before flying in close to finish off the crippled vessel. The completeness and power of the interface is often stunning.

The behavior of your wingmen is much improved over TIE Fighter's predecessor, X-Wing. Now, your companions always understand and acknowledge your commands, and almost always will obey them. Thus, if you really need support in a ferocious dogfight, or you need a particular ship destroyed before it jumps to hyperspace in 45 seconds, you can rely on your ability to call in your wingmen to help you out. Of course, their increased usefulness makes them more valuable, and you will have to protect them and ensure they are not destroyed early in a long battle.

TIE Fighter also features a flight recorder, with which you can record films of particular battles. These films remember the positions and actions of every ship, every missile, even every laser bolt, and you can replay the movies, following the craft of your choice (friend of foe) through the battle. There is even a feature that allows you to enter one of the movies, taking the helm of the player-controlled craft to complete the movie as you will. This allows you to film your most daring attacks and greatest victories, and not only watch them, but attempt them again and again.

The Macintosh version of TIE Fighter is the last of the great space flight simulators by Lucas Arts to be produced for the Macintosh. X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance are both PC releases. Note that the game is better with a joystick, but is too old to support input sprockets. While this is only partially relevant for Mac OS X users, Mac OS 9 users with USB joysticks that rely solely on input sprockets will need to use custom USB drivers. If they are not available from your joystick manufacturer (most are not), an excellent shareware Mac USB driver utility is available at http://www.usboverdrive.com .

TIE Fighter is one of the rare games that crosses many boundaries, providing an excellent and exciting flight-sim while simultaneously containing a rich plot and excellent control systems. The powerful flight recorder is an added bonus to an already superior game. Join the Dark Side and fly for the Empire, and you will have an experience you shall never forget.

Operation (Jewel Case)

Operation (Jewel Case) Review

When I was growing up I could never for the life of me figure out why my younger sister, and countless other American youth, found the game Operation so much fun. I could never get interested in playing the game.

The CD-ROM version is so much more entertaining. With 25 patients, some corny music, and the infamous "buzzz" whenever you bump into a germ, this game is so much more fun to play.

I have a 7 year-old child, and a 10 year old; both love it. I highly recommend this game. A perfect birthday present or "stocking stuffer" at Christmas.

Snowball Run

Snowball Run Review

The premise is very basic and child-like. Manuveur a Penguin (rolling on a snowball) through assorted trap-filled mazes. Down hills at incredible speeds, falling off the edges of the puzzle boArds, while jumping so high you literally fly away ...grabbing fish to score points and get free lives. I am 33 and i loved it. My five year old son can play about 20 of the 75 odd levels with little guidance, As well as I. Nice graphics, low system demands. Small amount of hard drive space and an easy learning curve. Real addictive fun.

Puzz3D CD: Neuschwanstein Bavarian Castle

Puzz3D CD: Neuschwanstein Bavarian Castle Review

The Bavarian Castle puzzle, at the "beginner" level, was the most difficult jigsaw puzzle that I've ever attempted--but I had never constructed a 3D puzzle before. Once I got familiar with the program design and controls (pieces can be rotated in two and three dimensions, construction lines help snap completed sections into place, sorting trays can be labeled and made "recloseable"), the jigsaw became deliciously challenging. I could barely tear myself away from the computer, once I got going.

As of now, I've completed the castle at the bronze and silver stages, and have enough understanding and memory of how the pieces fit together to consider skipping to the platinum level on my next attempt, to get full access to the castle interiors and puzzles. Despite having considerable experience with challenger jigsaws (both real and virtual), I doubt that I could have put the Bavarian Castle puzzle together if I had begun at the highest level, which offers no construction helps like architectural guides. (The Victorian Mansion puzzle was much easier, by comparison.)

The video clips of King Ludwig annoyed me, because of the actor's condescending approach to his character. However, the sound clips of selections from Wagner's operas are very nice.

The puzzle ran beautifully on my Pentium-100 machine with 128megs of RAM. The only problem with using this slow machine was that the movie clips ran with the audio and video slightly out of sync. In fact, I was totally impressed with the program's design and freedom from bugs, at least on my equipment.

Puzz3D CD: Neuschwanstein Bavarian Castle Overview

Wrebbit's Bavarian Castle 3-D Puzzle gives you sharp 3-D graphics, an intuitive interface, video clips, and on original musical score. After the puzzle is built, the adventure begins--featuring Neuschwanstein Castle, Tristan, Isolde, fiery love, curses, and more.

Medal of Honor Expansion Pack: Spearhead

Medal of Honor Expansion Pack: Spearhead Review

I don't have this version. I've got the one on Windows XP, and it runs just fine. I'd suggest you all buy that version instead. The only problem is, there was this time where you're in a snowy level and all these bombs start hitting, and you can only walk around for about ten seconds before more bombs smash the area, so you have to hide in a fox hole or a pit of dirt with a tent over it, and then there comes a time when you just can't do anything after that. The game froze up and stopped completely, taking me back to the desktop, so when I loaded it back up again, the graphics had gone from great, to blury and pixilated like the earlier MOH games. I've never made it past that point. But still, you'd be better off getting the version I got 'cause it doesn't have any problems besides the one I mentioned. The gameplay is just fine, and the bad guys actually die when you shoot them. The bullets don't just bounce off them like in Allied Assault and Breakthrough. Those are the other two I've got besides this one, so I know which ones are better than others as far as graphics. This is the best one in that area. So stay away from the MAC version, buy the Windows XP version, and that's a wrap.

Medal of Honor Expansion Pack: Spearhead Feature

  • In Medal Of Honor Allied Assault - Spearhead you'll engage the enemy in the most intense & important battles of the Second World War!
  • In this Expansion pack, you'll experience nine deadly battles from Normandy to Berlin
  • It's up to you make sure your team survives, by using bazookas, sniper rifles, and machine guns to hold back the Nazis
  • Be the first unit to confront a massive Nazi advance during the Battle Of The Bulge, and survive to tell about it

Myst V: End of Ages Limited Edition (Mac)

Myst V: End of Ages Limited Edition (Mac) Review

I've always considered the Myst series to be the "gold standard" of "adventure games". The puzzles have always been a little harder than most games, the graphics better than most (but I have seen better), and the story lines superior. And now the end has come.
Like other reviewers, I am absolutely stumped as to why Cyan/Ubisoft decided to use computer-generated characters, rather than the live actors that have served the series so well (especially Revelation!). It seems a shame to waste such a good actor as David Ogden Stiers with an animated character. The logic seems to be that computer-generated characters give the more anal-retentive programmers control over the characters' movements, but in reality, it doesn't. The movements come out looking stiff and unnatural - although Esher looks better than any computer animated characters I've seen in other games.
The four Ages (or worlds) you travel to have some very interesting graphics and puzzles - all of them centered around a Slate, which you can draw symbols that only the Bahro creatures can read. But, you are quite literally drawing on the slates, using your mouse, and if the Bahro can't read it, they can't do anything with it. The Bahro themselves have strange powers that can affect the weather (and other things), which are necessary to complete the puzzles. Actually, it's a lot of fun using the slates which control the Bahro and their abilities.
In the Limited Edition, you get the game (on 1 DVD-ROM), a soundtrack CD, and a making-of DVD, all in one DVD case. You also get a solution guide (which I only used once!), plus a souvenir lithograph.
It's a good ending, but not the great ending we were all hoping for. But it's still worth playing.

Myst V: End of Ages Limited Edition (Mac) Feature

  • Final chapter in the epic adventure game series
  • Easily explore vast 3-D worlds through a new point-and-click interface
  • New Slate system provides easier way to interact with the Myst environments
  • Worlds drawn with real-time 3-D ripple with life and movement

Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII Expansion Pack (Mac)

Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII Expansion Pack (Mac) Review

** Get the most complete Battlefield 1942 Game with add-ons by choosing Battlefield 1942: World War II Anthology. If it is not available then you need to get the three games in this pack - Battlefield: 1942, Battlefield 1942 Expansion: The Road to Rome and Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII Expansion Pack that work out a little more expensive. Battlefield 1942: Deluxe Edition has 1942 original and Road to Rome. So all you need with the Deluxe Edition is to get Secret Weapons. To be honest the steepest it works out at is. The Anthology is .00 and is the same price as the Deluxe Edition plus Secret Weapons. Getting all three separately will cost you nearly .00 so get the best deal in bundle packs.**

Want to play the best war simulation? Go play the old Operation Flashpoint and pray that the spring 2006 Operation Flashpoint 2 deadline will be met with the best war multiplayer simulator ever conceived. Want to play a single player war game that matched the experience of Medal of Honour: Allied Assault? Then go play Call of Duty and get the expansion pack Call of Duty: United Offensive. Want to the play the best SWAT type tactical one on one? Then go get Half-Life 2 and play Counter-Strike. Fancy a futuristic sci-fi multiplayer with huge maps? Then get the latest Unreal Tournament. So what else is there? Well to be honest Battlefield 1942 is straight up probably one of the best multiplayer games I have played, but be warned, the simulation experience does call for infinite amounts of patients and the game is extremely buggy to install. There is very little good technical support except for what the community offers, updates can be patchy, people end up can't playing it, and it suffers from fatal spawn point easy target syndrome that has rendered many of the maps unplayable... however new maps are updated, but just don't expect the BF1942 community to be as responsive as let's say STEAM. The bottom line here is that even single player mode is not supported. The game comes pretty much as it is served so expect to spend more than a day, maybe a week, to get it to work on your machine with lots of google searches for your problem. The solutions should be found in forums troubleshooting guides. Be prepared for discs that don't appear to like firewalls, anti-virus checkers and other background processes. This is the game of games in terms of installation bugs and crashes. In short - Requires broadband INTERNET.

Single player like we said is not supported. Multiplayer is one big CAPTURE THE FLAG, but what a game of CTF! Problem right away is the lack of classes that looks restrictive but it is actually okay, with five types of soldiers to choose from - sniper, machine gun, rockets, medic, engineer... so it is closer to Team Fortress than Operation Flashpoint that allows full configuration of up to twenty classes. Having said that it does not reduce the impact of the game, but does leave the realm of simulation, deviating into more Unreal Tournament territory where there is very real possibility of just leaving your team behind and going on a frag-a-thon across the map. If you are into that sort of thing then maybe the more recent, but certainly not as good, Battlefield Vietnam, can offer you that type of solo bush mission multiplayer experience like Far Cry with lesser graphics, but if it is Pearl Harbor, Petersburg, German Forests, French Country, Operation Overlord, multiplayer style, where you can pilot lots of vehicles, and use a little team commands, then sir, Battlefield 1942 is really what you should be playing across that 1MB connection you got jacked into that modem.

So limiting by its nature of being a multiplayer only game, with a difficult install, that is quite old'ish by today's standards, still manages to provide the best World War II multiplayer entertainment you have ever seen with Operation Flashpoint beating it for realism and detail as a simulation, but this is the war game that people play online, and it still has quite a large community, meaning plenty of 60 (30/30) servers are still up and running with Battlefield 2 coming out sometime in 2005 (hopefully early) you can still live with getting this just because it offers world war II as you want to play it, on-line. I must say that even though I am an avid CS:S player, this one has stolen it for a bit. Battlefield 1942 really is worth it, after you get it running, and after you have the patients to actually play it like a solider ---- crawl for 2 minutes before sniping 3 enemy over the space of 10 minutes with guys above you on a score of 44... patients is the virtue while playing this if you want to win.... Or if you have the skill, grab a bomber and go drop some bouncers on a spawn building for mass kill. Personally I prefer to play to the sneaking sniper. You know I 0wned u. 

Pros:
- Multiplayer must-have.
- Fairly realistic simulation experience that you will play again and again.
- The only World War II simulation worth playing on-line right now.
- Good game engine. Solid playing.
- Replaces Operation Flashpoint as best on-line war simulation game.
- Really big player numbers of servers.

Cons:
- Harsh reality of enduring install problems and updates.
- Expensive.
- Needs broadband.
- Spawn points have exploit bugs.
- No voice-com.
- Not much of a team communication interface either.
- 2002 graphics... but still nice. Models need work.
- There is a bit of a learning curve.
- Not as vast as Operation Flashpoint.

Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII Expansion Pack (Mac) Feature

  • Seven new weapons include throwable one-shot-kill knives, the Bren light machine gun, the Auto 5 shotgun, and the Mauser K98 grenade rifle
  • Eight new World War II campaigns, including combat missions at a V2 research facility and Hitler's hideaway, The Eagle's Nest
  • All-new locations offer unique Battlefield experiences, ranging from nightfall in Prague to a winter battle in Norway
  • New objective-based mode - players must accomplish specific objectives, such as destroying a secret weapons facility, in order to win the battle
  • Introducing British Commando and German Elite troops

Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII Expansion Pack (Mac) Overview

Defeat your enemies with a variety of experimental firepower, including the Wasserfall Guided Rocket, the Natter Rocker Plane, and the revolutionary Rocket Pack. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six (Mac)

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six (Mac) Review

R6 is an addictive, thinking-person's shooter game. It satisfies in ways that standard FPS's can't.

Not only does it provide impressive graphics and full-immersion context; R6 also encourages the never-ending process of planning and self-improvement, as opposed to mindless shooting. Personnel rosters, armory, equipment, and attack routes must all be tailored to each mission. Perfectionists will find themselves spending hours planning and practicing, refining and improving, testing different possibilities, devising creative solutions, redoing and redoing and redoing ...

There are different ways of getting satisfaction from R6. On some missions you're better off being the master strategist, devising finely coordinated attack plans for multiple teams, then going hands-off and monitoring developments "through the eyes of God". At such times, your satisfaction will come from being an effective planner/coordinator, seeing all your team members back safely while achieving mission objectives.

On other missions, you'll find that even your best plans are laid to waste. In such situations you must take tactical leadership, controlling individual shooters or teams one by one. You'll feel the tension that comes from full immersion in the CQB action, as you try simultaneously to balance mission objectives, tactical decisions, recon, attack, self-defense, hostage rescue, and most importantly, situational awareness.

For those who are interested in such things, R6 can even provide good mental discipline for the bridging of strategy, tactics, and execution.

Other reviewers have already done a good job of highlighting the game's strengths and weaknesses, so I won't repeat them. Precisely because R6 is such a significant step forward in the tactical shooter genre, its flaws and limitations are all the more frustrating. As RedStorm Entertainment develops more advanced sequels, we look forward to better AI and more sophisticated control of the action.

All in all, a very impressive game that has set a new standard for the genre, and has even inspired some capable imitators.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six (Mac) Overview

Action rules the day as you lead an elite, multinational strike force and engage enemies in exotic locales, such as a decaying mansion in the Congo, a Paris theme park, and a North Sea drilling platform.

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy Review

I bought this game used via Amazon a couple of weeks ago, just in time to come down with a cold. Lucky me, I'm stuck at home and too tired to think or do much else, but a nice hack and slash video game is a welcome diversion and not too tiring.

What can I say, it's a first person shooter plus Force powers. They did a very good job of integrating the Force powers and lightsaber with traditional guns and explosives, so you feel like you could whip out a blaster and zap a Stormtrooper, or cut him in half with your saber. The missions are okay; there is a reasonable storyline but not as involving as Knights of the Old Republic. But really the story is linear and your job is to go in, kill a ton of bad guys, solve some small puzzles (how do I open this door? How do I get across this chasm? etc.), and maybe kill a boss at the end of the mission.

The most notable fact about the game is that it works fine on recent hardware. I have a 2.16GHz MacBook Pro (running Mac OS X 10.5.7) and played it on an external monitor at 1600x1200 with the maximum quality video settings and it was *fast*. (I downloaded the free Universal Binary update from Aspyr.com after installing the game but before playing it. Universal means the game is ready for Intel based Macs.) The cinematic scenes were sluggish and skipped badly (I guess the codec isn't part of that Universal Binary upgrade?) and in one canyon near a Jedi Temple the 3D video was laggy when there was a lot of depth in the scene, but that was basically just on a bridge until I crossed it. Otherwise, the action was fast and the frame rate kept up at all times.

Finally, I had a lot of fun exploring the physics of the game with regard to using the Force to kill the bad guys. I interpreted "Mind your surroundings" in Jedi speak to mean "use Force Push to shove them into the lava / off a cliff to avoid messy Lightsaber duels." I probably had more Sith kills due to gravity than any other weapon at my disposal. And don't forget that while some Sith can reflect projectiles back at you, many can't... so you can use an explosive round to bounce them over the edge and into the abyss, no messy melee required.

I highly recommend this game.

P.S. use Quick Save often!
